New Hope : New Hope is a quiet little town on the banks of the Delaware River and was the site of a major ferry crossing in the 1700's and 1800's. It was originally known as Wells' Ferry and by the American Revolution it was called Coryell's Ferry. Around the same time, its sister-city Lambertville, NJ was also called Coryell's Ferry.

In the summer of 1778 the Continental Army under the command of George Washingon crossed the Delaware River at these points enroute to Monmouth Courthouse.

After the Revolution a fire destroyed a good part of the town, including its biggest employer, the Parry Mill. The town slumped into a brief depression after that but as it began to rebuild out of the ashes, the town was renamed "New Hope".

Up until the early 20th century it was a busy little mill town. The Delaware Canal runs through town and with the demise of the canal the mills began to shut down one by one. Today, New Hope is an artists' Mecca filled with fine restaurants and eclectic shops.

Did I forget to mention that there are lots of nice little nooks and crannies to explore?

Buckingham Township : At 33 square miles, Buckingham is the largest township in Bucks County. The original inhabitants of the area were the Lenni Lenapi Indians. Their legacy lives on with the many place names associated with the township such as Lahaska, Holicong, and Neshaminy. The first white settlers in the area were English and Welsh Quakers and Germans who began arriving in the early 1700's. Their legacies live on with the wonderful old stone homes and barns that still dot the area.

The Buckingham Friends Quaker Meetinghouse is an architectural centerpiece that reflects the building style that was prevalent in those early days.

Peddler's Village in Lahaska is an area landmark and home to a quaint shopping village.

With its rolling hills and country roads Buckingham Township is a delightful place in which to get lost!

Carversville : Carversville was originally a Lenni Lenape gathering place and first surveyed in 1702. The first roads were cut through the surrounding forests by the 1730s.

The village has been known by several names: Indian Village, Mill Town, and Milton. It finally acquired its present-day name in 1833. By the late Nineteenth Century, the Village supported several mills, a tannery, a hat factory and a hotel.

No longer the industrial center it was, today it's a quaint village with its own town square and rural charm.

Lake Nockamixon and Vicinity : Lake Nockamixon was formed in the latter half of the 20th century by the damming the Tohickon Creek. Much of the lake's site was once a town called "Tohickon". Many roads and buildings were submerged by this lake. Each road had a bridge where it crossed the Tohickon Creek. All buildings and bridges in the area were demolished before the lake was flooded. One bridge remains, however, and it is now submerged under 70 feet of water. This is a stone arch bridge that was built in the 18th-19th century.

The name "Nockamixon" means "at the place of the soft soil" in the Lenni Lenape Indian language. Several American Indian sites from the Lenni Lenape Tribe (the Delawares) were located in the area. The lake is a popular recreation area and is popular among boating, hiking, camping, and fishing enthusiasts.

Doylestown: The Mercer Mile : Henry Chapman Mercer was a historian, archeologist, collector, and ceramist -- a true early 20th century Renaissance man. He left behind a legacy of concrete buildings within a 1.5 mile area of Doylestown known as the "Mercer Mile". His efforts preserved a way of life that would have been long forgotten and to stroll through any of these buildings is like walking through a time capsule.

You may wonder what is so unusual about a building made of concrete. You see, in the Mercer buildings, practically everything was made of concrete, even window panes! In his home, Fonthill, there are only a few wooden objects -- mostly pieces of furniture. Henry was also a bit of an eccentric. One night he decided to burn his garabage on top of the roof at Fonthill. Why? Probably because he could do it without burning the place down. This bonfire had at least one notable witness: James A. Michener (another Doylestown resident), who documented it.

Fonthill was Henry Mercer's home and was featured on the A&E Series "America's Castles". The house is quite ecletic and a heck of a lot of fun to explore!

The Mercer Museum houses Henry Mercer's historical artifact collection. The building is 7 stories high and if you plan on going there, plan to spend an entire afternoon there. The Bucks County Historical Society Library is also housed at the museum.

The Moravian Pottery and Tile Works produced tile and mosaics for floors, walls, and celings (and still does). Fonthill and the musem are decorated with these tiles.

Point Pleasant : The Lenni Lenape Indians were the first to inhabit the area on the Delaware River known to us today as Point Pleasant. In later years, river villages like Point Pleasant developed with inns and taverns to service the rough lot of rafters and canalmen who transported materials on the Delaware River and Canal.

The first grist mill in Point Pleasant was built in 1748, which ground grain for the soldiers during the Revolutionary War. In addition to the grist mill, Point Pleasant also had two saw mills.

Point Pleasant was also a way station for the Doylestown-Frenchtown-NewYork stage.

Approximately two miles from town is Ralph Stover State Park. The Tohickon Creek flows through the park and empties into the Delaware River at Point Pleasant. Along its banks is a section of the park called High Rocks, a sheer 200 foot rock face that affords experienced rock climbers a unique challenge.

The park is named for Ralph Stover, the owner of a water-powered grist mill that was at the site in the 18th century. Remnants of the mill, and the millrace, which diverted the water from above the dam to power the mill, are still visible.

Lumberville : The village of Lumberville is located just north of New Hope and has the only suspension footbridge that traverses the Delaware River. This village was once a thriving mill town but like its sister village of Carversville, its mills have given way to picturesque homes and restaurants.

The village is home to the Black Bass Inn, which has been catering to travelers since the 1700's. During the American Revolution this village sided with the British and when George Washington's men came around looking for a place to stay, they were turned away.
