Valley Forge National Historic Park : Twice a month I volunteer at Valley Forge National Historic Park as a historic interpreter. Basically, that amounts to me dressing up in a Colonial outfit and telling people about the history surrounding the encampment that took place there in 1777-1778. It's a lot of fun but some days it is rather slow while on others we seems to have a steady stream of visitors. I do enjoy bringing my camera with me and taking pictures during the quieter times.

UPDATE: The area around Washington's HQ is scheduled to be reopened to the public on Memorial Day Weekend. On May 10, volunteers were given a walkthrough of the area and quite a lot of changes had been made: a new parking lot was put in and the train station has been completely renovated. We didn't get to go inside Headquarters but from the outside it sure looked nice.

Spring Fling 2008 : Well, winter here in central Bucks County was a bit of a bust this year. We didn't have much snow, which made it easy to commute to work, but lousy for snow pictures. One would think that with so little in the way of snow and cold weather that spring would arrive early. Well, it didn't! March was still chilly -- so chilly that it seemed as though the flowers, bushes and trees were afraid to bloom. But around mid-April we finally started getting some spring color here.

Central Pennsylvania Splendor : Central Pennsylvania is one of the most underrated areas on the east coast United States. The scenery there is breathtaking, particularly in the fall.

Washington Crossing Park : The Friday after Thanksgiving we still had some color on the trees, which is unusual for the area in which I live. Since it was positively gorgeous outside, I decided to head out to photograph some of the last fall color of the season. And apparently it was a good move on my part because a few days later it was all gone.

Battlefield Restoration at Gettysburg : Some remarkable things have been happening in Gettysburg over the past 2-3 years. The National Park Service is in the process of restoring the battlefields to the 1863 appearance. When I first saw Devil's Den and the Triangular Field areas I wondered how the soldiers made out with all those trees. The Triangular Field was just some claustrophic area surrounded by a stone fence. How could all those artillerymen situated on Houck's Ridge see the Texans heading up toward them?

Well: the trees weren't there!

With the trees gone, one gains an understanding of what those soldiers went through, and how the vastness of the rocky field made them look like ants.

Some photos are available as panoramas. For help on ordering a panorama photo, click here.

Eastern State Penitentiary : Opened in 1829, Eastern State in Philadephia, PA is considered to be the world's first true penitentiary. Its system of incarceration originated and encouraged solitary confinement as a form of rehabilitation in the hope that it would move the criminal toward spiritual reflection and change. The method was a Quaker-inspired system of isolation from other prisoners, with labor. By 1913, Eastern State officially abandoned the solitary system and operated as a congregate prison until it closed in 1970.

In the mid-70’s, the empty prison was designated as a National Historic Landmark and was eventually purchased by the city of Philadelphia to be used as a tourist attraction. The Pennsylvania Prison Society of Philadelphia was placed in charge of operating and promoting it as a historic site and they continue to conduct tours of the penitentiary today.

Some its more famous inmates included Al Capone and William "Slick Willie" Sutton.

No significant attempts have been made for renovations or upkeep. The facility is intentionally kept in a state of preserved ruin. Visitors are asked to sign a liability waiver due to some minor safety concerns.
